New Role as Vice Speaker of the Hawaii State House of Representatives [Dec. 9th, 2006|02:26 pm]
Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu
On November 17, 2006, the Hawaii State House leadership was announced in the media. Speaker Calvin K.Y. Say appointed me Vice Speaker of the House. Some of my tasks include assisting the Speaker manage the House, chairing the House floor sessions when directed by the Speaker, ex-officio to all committees, and representing and running the House in the Speaker's absence. I look forward to serving my district and the State of Hawaii in my new leadership role.

What happened?

Jon can you tell us what happened during the leadership discussions? Why was there a change? Who got the desserts? Who got punished? And Why?

Dwight Takamine

John, congratulations!

What happened with Dwight Takamine. I always found him to be fair and honorable, and I was shocked to see him removed.

Can you explain, now that you are the second-ranking officer of the House, what the thinking was?

Hello, is anyone there?

Jon, when you step up to the place as the vice chairperson of the house, you really need to speak up. Can you answer the questions above? What kind of leader are you when you choose not to respond. Very shameful.

We will do our best to work together

The current leadership of the House seeks to do what is best for Hawaii. There is also importance on "balance."

I respect anyone who decides to serve in public office. In any company or organization, there will be leadership changes done democratically. I will work and be friends with elected officials even if they are on the opposite side of the Democratic majority because he or she has different ideals or has personal ambitions that differ with the majority. Nonetheless, we all still have to work together as best as we can for Hawaii. I think differences is healthy for a democratic society because it stimulates discussion and ideas.

Thanks Jon.

But more specifically to the questions posted above - why was Dwight Takamine removed? Did you support his removal? Why or why not?

When you respond to this posting, I would appreciate it if you were a bit more specific than the last posting. I know many bloggers and observers are watching how you handle this important question.

If you are not sure what to say, start with the truth.
